Ceiling Fans @ Tampoi Lighting Centre

We took the plunge!

After reviewing the prices of ceiling fans at a local retail store, online portals, i.e. Lazada and Taobao, and blog/forum reviews, we decided to check Tampoi Lighting out. Why Tampoi? We chose it due to its reliability since many Singaporeans purportedly bought their lighting and fans from there.

We headed to JB in the late afternoon. Stopped by D'Shanghai (just outside Sutera Mall) for dim sum at 4p.m. and then Aeon supermarket for diapers. We bought Goon pants at RM27.90 each for L48 and XL42 sizes (U.P. RM34.90).

By the time we reached Tampoi Lighting using GPS, it was 6 p.m.! We spent 2-3 hours checking out the various ceiling fans on display. Lots of "no camera" stickers hung from the ceiling, possibly to deter price/model checking. My earlier online search reviewed information on stores such as HT lighting and Yes lighting, which could sell equivalent fans at a cheaper price but we did not even recce these stores, as we value time and customer service over the slight difference in price.

We dropped by Starworld first, as it was just 2-3 units away. They did not carry the designer fans that we wanted, so we checked out the ceiling fans on level 2 (Rubine and another I-can't-recall-which brand) quickly, before we made our way to Tampoi.

Tampoi carries a good range of fans popular with Singaporeans, such as KDK, Panasonic, Elmark, Alpha and NSB.
NSB is the sole distributor for the Vento Fino2 fan that we like. After checking out the wind speed, motor sound, designs and colours, we confirmed our Aeratron A3 50" DC fan (RM1299/1399) and Vento Fino 1 & 2 models, made in Taiwan. These models do not have light.
We almost wanted to get the Elmark Aeronaumics 42" tipped/winged bladed fan @RM1100+ (similar in design compared with Amasco Triniti @S$799 and Fanco E-Trinity3 @S$580), but settled eventually on the Elmark Elba 36" DC fan at RM860, complete with LED light & remote control for our patio.

We did a quick check on the KDK and Panasonic fans too as they were cheaper, but they did not carry the sizes that we want. The smallest fan was a 48" and they were out of stock for the KDK model.

Our buying experience was pretty good as we were attended to by a friendly, enthusiastic and responsible young chap, Ah Wei. He addressed all our queries well and once we confirmed on the models, he helped us to check all the fans and tuned the remote controls. The Elmark fan (the only piece) that he opened had some issues with the LED panel and he frankly showed it to us, so we decided on an alternate colour. The exchange rate was 3.09 in Singapore. We did not bring enough cash and decided to buy some ringgit at the rate of 3.06 (stated in the store). There were quite a number of guys in the store (salesmen and technical know-how), but our salesman stands out.

On my way out, I posed a question to our friendly salesman: why is the warranty a year for parts and only 3 years for motor in Malaysia, whereas it is lifetime warranty for motor in Singapore. To which he replied, that the reason was due to the unstable electrical supply in Malaysia.

Of course, we do keep our fingers crossed, that the fans would work well and not wobble after installation. We purchased the U-bracket at RM3 for the Elmark model. Aeratron and Vento Fino apparently have the same bracket for ceiling installation which do not require any balancing.

Overall, Tampoi was a good one-stop station for us to review the exact models on site and I would give a two-thumbs up for Ah Wei!

After which, we drove to Lavender to get cheese tarts and breads, followed by supper at New Lucky. Oops, forgot to pump the petrol on our way back!
